  1. HI,

I follow your blog each week - though sometimes the timings of the postings don't allow me the chance to check out the prices.

Interesting that you work for Betfair - is the blog seen as a conflict within Betfair. Are they aware you do it. I'm asking only because if it was ever to be considered "insider" tipping there could be issues for those that act on the tips.

Not that I think this is the case - but interested to know if you ever addressed that question.

    Thanks
    MD

  2. Hi MD,

Yes many people are well aware within the company that I work for Betfair.

Me posting a blog or suggesting bets is not in conflict with workng for Betfair or possibly insider training. Betfair being an exchange means that the prices are set by punters not Betfair. I can't influence the prices other than doing bets myself or laying bets. I don't have any insider knowledge either with any of the teams barring a passion for following the sport.

If I worked for a bookmakers there might be case as I could influence prices but most bookmaker employees are not allowed to bet with their own company.

There is nothing different from me tipping or rugby tips in the racing post (except I'm probably better ;). The only conflict Betfair might have is if I did this in my work time!

  3. Thanks for getting back - that's what I guessed.

Some of the bets you suggest (especially something like the unders) have very thin markets in Betfair. I know you also suggest laying with the bookies as well but if punters were mainly using Betfair it wouldn't take many people following you to shift the market - especially if people are putting in bets to try to make the prices you recommend. The result is that the suggested prices may be gone quite easily.

Do you lay your bets before posting or after - again not an issue per se but thought it worth being out there.

Hope the questions don't cause offence - just curious.

And keep the blog up - good reading every week.

You seem very interested in Rugby Kens betting activities, rather than his tipping blog. If RK has got ant sense (and obviously he has that in abundance) he will be placing his bets before posting on here, what would you do.

I would stop worrying about any conflict with BF and his betting activities, and just read the blog as I do and have a punt or not,no offence.
    Cheers

  5. Hi IW,

I'm not taking aim at his betting activities - I've been following the blog since last year and I rate Ken's opinion. My questions are more to do with my betting activity as I want to work out an approach that maximises the chances of hitting the spreads / prices that are suggested.

As Ken has suggested before, even if a price isn't available freely, the handy thing with Betfair is that you can put the price in as an unmatched bet, effectively making the offer on the spread. What I am trying to work out (for myself) is whether I should realistically expect to get matched - it wouldn't take many of us reading this blog putting up offers on Betfair to skew the market on a thinly traded price. In which case, should I consider a tighter price to increase the chances of being matched.

That's why I ask - and if Ken wants to not answer that's no problem. But I think getting "best execution" can be almost as important in betting as getting the winner / loser right. There have been plenty of times where I would have won a bet if had a 1 point better spread.... can make all the difference.

  6. Hello MD,
A good riposte, but I honestly think you already know the answers to your queries and as for considering tighter prices, why not try it and see what happens.
On a different note I couldn't agree with you more on getting "best execution" and for me it is "THE" most important part. I myself have a betfair account , but only use it to view the forums which are very informative and instead prefer to have a few on line accounts, and pick up the best price and or points that way,can sometimes be as much as 1-6 points difference on the cap which can be helpful.I could stand corrected , but I have a copy of RKs spread sheet of punts over the last few weeks and he very rarely uses the exchange, instead like myself preferring the bookies .
    Cheers IW

  7. It's all about timing on Betfair for rugby. Can't recommend a bet there when only £50 is available obviously but if you play your cards right (lay other side, ask for a price for moderate amounts, check in just before kick-off etc), it is possible to get better prices on some games. But no half-serious punter should ever have less than 5 accts...
